Multi-screen and TV display

7 min readLive

The Live window spanning several monitors, and the TV display that shows screens in turn on a second monitor or on TVs on the network. In Studio: the TV display (second monitor) and Network TVs tables.

Two separate features

There are two different ways to spread the display over several monitors. They can be used together; TV display is not opened only on the monitors covered by multi-screen.

PropertyWhat it doesWhere it is set
Multi-screenThe Live window covers several monitors together in full screen; a single, wide screen is shown and operated.Live settings › General › Multi-Screen
Second monitor TV displayOn another display connected to the Live computer (or on a TV on the network), the selected screens are shown in turn, in full screen and read-only.Remote monitoring › TV display (second monitor) and Network TVs

Multi-screen

  1. Determine the screen size

In Live settings › General › Multi-Screen, select Number of screens, Screen layout (Side by side, Stacked, Grid (two rows)) and Monitor resolution. The strip on the tab gives the screen size that fully covers this layout (e.g. 2 displays side by side, each 1920 × 1080: 3840 × 1080).

  2. Set the screen to this size

In the Screen properties › Layout › Preset sizes section of the screen, select the recommended size. If the ratio does not match, the screen is fitted proportionally and empty space remains on the displays; the strip warns about this.

  3. Leave full screen on

If the Open in full screen option is off, multi-monitor mode is not applied and the window opens on a single monitor (Studio shows a warning).

  • Monitors are ordered from left to right by their position in Windows (top to bottom if equal); starting from the monitor on which the Live window opens, the requested number of monitors is covered. If there are not enough monitors to the right, the selection shifts to the left. If fewer monitors are connected than requested, all connected monitors are covered.
  • The screen is fitted proportionally to the area it covers. Screen layout and Monitor resolution are only used to calculate the recommended size; Live uses the real monitor positions.
  • On covered monitors, the second-screen TV display does not open; if no uncovered monitor is left, the TV display does not open at all (Studio warns you).

Second monitor TV display

If a second monitor or a TV is connected to the Live computer, the selected screens of the project rotate there in turn. The display is read-only: there is no menu and nothing can be clicked.

TV display (second monitor): turning the display on, selecting the monitor, the warning banner and the display sequence table.
  1. Second monitor — turn on the display, select the monitor and the warning banner.
  2. Duration (s) — the time the screen stays on the display.
  3. Transition — the transition effect between screens.
  1. Turn on the display

In the Remote monitoring section, open the TV display (second monitor) tab and set TV display on the second monitor to On.

  2. Select the display

Display: Automatic (first monitor without the panel) or Monitor 1 … Monitor 4. The monitor number is the number in the Windows Display settings. The display on which Live runs (the panel) and the monitors covered by the multi-screen cannot be selected; if no suitable display is available, the window does not open.

  3. Enter the display order

Add screen rows to the table (at most 40). In each row:

ColumnMeaning
ScreenThe full 2D or 3D screen to display. Pop-up window and template (fixed area) screens cannot be displayed; if one is selected, Studio warns and the row is skipped.
Duration (s)How long the screen stays on the display: 5 – 3600 s, default 20.
TransitionNone, Fade, Slide left, Slide up, Blur, Zoom in, Curtain or Random.
Transition speedFast (0.5 s), Normal (1 s), Slow (2 s), Very slow (3 s). If the transition is None, the selection is locked.

You reorder the table with ↑ ↓; the strip at the bottom shows the number of screens and the total duration of one round. When the sequence ends, it starts again from the beginning. If there is a single row, the screen stays fixed on the display and no transition takes place. If the list is empty, the description display list is empty appears on the display.

Alarm banner
If on, the active alarms are shown in turn in the band at the bottom of the display: if there are alarms awaiting acknowledgment, they appear in a red band; otherwise the active alarms; if there are no alarms, a thin quiet band. An alarm stays in the band for 6 – 8 seconds.
Top bar
Project name, displayed screen, 3 / 9 · Next: …, sequence dots, connection status, clock, and a progress line showing the transition time.
  • The fixed top and bottom area screens are not shown on the TV; the entire display is left to the next screen in the sequence. The language follows the language on the Live computer.
  • The TV window is re-evaluated when the connected screens change (when a monitor is plugged in or removed). The state of the window is shown in Live in the system menu › Remote monitoring… window, in the Second screen (TV) section: Showing — screen N, Second screen not found (requested: …), Window closed or Disabled in project; the resolution of the connected screens is also listed (the screen occupied by Live is marked as panel).
  • Every 6 hours, at a screen change, the display is fully refreshed; it is also rebuilt when the project changes.

Network TVs

An address is entered in the browser of the smart TV (or another computer); the TV runs through its own display sequence. This feature requires Browser monitoring to be switched on: the TV addresses connect to the browser server of Live.

TVs on the network: the number, name, screen count and address of the TVs; on the right, the display order of the selected TV.12
TVs on the network: the number, name, screen count and address of the TVs; on the right, the display order of the selected TV.
  1. TV No. — determines the address (/tv1 … /tv8).
  2. Address — typed into the TV browser.
  • A maximum of 8 TVs can be defined; the number (TV 1 … TV 8) is the first free number and cannot be changed manually. The address has the form http://<Live PC'sinin IP adresi>:<port>/tv1 … /tv8 (the port is 8080 by default).
  • Each TV has its own Name (at most 30 characters), its own Alarm banner option and, below, its own Display sequence table. A new TV starts with a copy of the display sequence of the second display.
  • TVs watch without password (on by default): anyone on a permitted network who knows the address can open the TV display. If it is off, a log-on with a browser user is required on the TV. For access networks and users, see Remote monitoring.
  • The actual addresses are listed in Live in the System menu › Remote monitoring… window, under the heading TV addresses, with Copy buttons.

Limitations and points to note

  • The TV display is read-only; there is no control, alarm acknowledgment or setting. Scripts do not run on the TV.
  • Multi-screen is applied only in full screen. TV is not opened on the covered monitors.
  • If no second display is found (if there is only the single display where Live is), the TV window does not open; this is deliberate, so as not to cover the panel.
  • The display sequence has at most 40 rows; the duration is 5 – 3600 seconds.
  • Multi-screen and TV display must be tested in the field on a real multi-monitor computer.
